Paderborn University Library

The University Library provides services to support research, teaching and learning of all members of the University of Paderborn. It is a public academic library which also makes available literature and information for users in the city of Paderborn as well as in the region and beyond. To perform its tasks, the library cooperates with local and supra-regional institutions and makes use of the services of central facilities of librarianship.

Currently, the total collection encompasses more than 1.7 million units (printed books, electronic books, periodicals, databases and microfilms/-fiches). A selection of local, national and international daily and weekly newspapers and magazines is available. 90 percent of the holdings are arranged systematically by subjects on open shelves.

Reader places for individuals and groups are distributed over the whole library. To use electronic information resources, more than 80 computer terminals are at your disposal. Owners of notebooks can search in the internet in the rooms of the library by means of a wireless LAN card. One of the central duties of the library is to provide information and media competence necessary for studies and profession. The vast range of services is accessible free of charge during 107 hours 7 days a week to everyone interested in it.

Catalogue/Lending

The library holdings as well as the electronic media licensed for use on the university's premises are listed in an electronic catalogue which can be consulted worldwide via WWW. You can search for title keywords, names of authors, names of corporate bodies, years of publication and other details. The catalogue is connected to the lending system of the library which for example informs you about the lending periods of media on loan and allows you to reserve them.

Databases

A wide range of subject and general databases, national and international library and union catalogues as well as lists of booksellers, antiquarian bookshops and publishers are available for your literature search from any university-networked computer.

Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Services

Books and articles which are not stocked either by the university library or by any other public library of Paderborn can be obtained through interlibrary loan and document delivery services. They can be ordered electronically via WWW. Books listed in the union catalogue of North Rhine-Westphalia are delivered extremely rapidly to the university library via the networked interlibrary loan service.

Digital Full-Texts

The Electronic Periodicals Database (EZB) offered by the university library lists several thousand titles of periodicals that allow access to licensed or freely available full-text articles in the internet. Electronic dissertations and other electronic documents produced by members of the university are collected, indexed, archived and made available for use. Additional full texts and multimedia products you can find in the library are for example dictionaries, electronic text editions, annual archive CD-ROMs of newspapers and periodicals as well as multimedia textbooks.

Specialised Information

A team of specialised librarians is available to help with enquiries in most subjects. They cooperate with members of the faculties in the field of stock selection and they take desiderata. Please contact them if you need special literature and information or are interested in databases and the internet for your literature search as well as specialised training (for example introduction to database searching, document delivery services, digital library). The specialised librarians also search for you in chargeable fact and full-text databases, at a fee.
