Open Access Journals Paderborn University
The University Library (UB) supports researchers and institutions of Paderborn University in publishing their own (Diamond) Open Access journals. It ensures the sustainability of the published content and maximises its visibility via the "Open Journals Paderborn University" portal.
Publication of publications from EU projects: The University Library expands its publication service
All peer-reviewed scientific publications produced as part of Horizon Europe funding must be made accessible via a trusted institutional or subject repository in accordance with the EU's current funding conditions. The University Library offers researchers at Paderborn University the opportunity to publish publications from EU projects on the "Publication Service" portal.
New in the library catalogue: Catalogue of teaching, learning and research materials / Open Educational Resources (OER)
The University Library is now listing teaching, learning and research materials / Open Educational Resources (OER) in its catalogue, thus facilitating access to freely available educational resources for study, teaching and research.
Metadata is provided, e.g. for online courses, videos, scripts, presentations or simulations that have been published under an open licence - i.e. materials that can generally be used, processed and redistributed free of charge.
The regularly updated data comes from OERSI, a central search engine for OER in the higher education sector in Germany and beyond, which has been developed as an open source-based service since the beginning of 2020 as a jointly initiated project by the University Library Centre of North Rhine-Westphalia (hbz) and the German National Library of Science and Technology Hannover (TIB) and went live in spring 2021.
OERSI bundles references to free learning and teaching resources from German and international platforms and universities. The resources themselves are not stored in OERSI; only the metadata is brought together and prepared and made available for a standardised search.
The OER metadata can be searched together with the other resources listed in the University Library catalogue. However, it is also possible to filter the search results for OERs using a separate filter in the catalogue.
With this new service, the University Library is supporting the Paderborn University's Open Educational Resources (OER) Policy to "sustainably anchor OER in the university culture".

21.05.2025: Fourth Open Access Talk: Open Access for Dummies
On 21 May 2025 from 13:00 to 14:00, the fourth Open Access Talk, this time entitled "Open Access for Dummies", will take place on the entrance level of the University Library. After presenting experiences on Open Access from professors from different faculties in the previous talks and also talking about quality assurance in the OA publication process, this talk is explicitly aimed at people who still know little about Open Access. After a short keynote speech by Anna Nickel (University Library), we will focus on your questions and exchange ideas over coffee and cake in a relaxed atmosphere.
The event is suitable for researchers at all career levels, from doctoral candidates to professors.
The Open Access Talk is organised by the OASE project ("Open Access - Systematic Development of an Open Access Culture at the University - a Development-Oriented Empirical Case Study"). The project, funded by the BMBF and led by Professor Dr Dorothee M. Meister (Media Education and Empirical Media Research) in cooperation with the Managing Director of Paderborn University Library, Dr Dietmar Haubfleisch, and the CIO and Head of the Centre for Information and Media Technologies (ZIM), Professor Dr Gudrun Oevel. Gudrun Oevel, the aim of the project is to impart knowledge on the topic of open access publishing to academics by testing new information and communication formats, among other things, and thus to support the development of an open access culture at Paderborn University. The knowledge gained from the project will also be used to raise awareness of the extensive OA services already offered by the University Library and to expand them in line with demand.
Further information on the OASE project and event can be found on the project pages.
The OASE project team is looking forward to welcoming you and to stimulating discussions!
It is not necessary to register for the event.

Writing room for doctoral students in the library
Writing can often be a lonely and arduous activity during the doctoral phase. Structured writing time and discussions with like-minded people can help to make the writing process easier.
The University Library, together with the Competence Centre for Writing, offers a local and inspiring space for doctoral students from all faculties.
From the beginning of April until the end of the year, a small group study room is available in the library every week on Fridays from 9 a.m. to around 3 p.m. for individual writing and for exchanging ideas with others. If you like, you will find the Writing Competence Centre's box of writing tricks with everything that makes writing (more) productive: a timetable to guide you through your writing day, great literature on academic writing, helpful method sheets and much more.
On one Friday of each month (4 April, 9 May, 6 June, 4 July, 5 September, 10 October, 14 November and 5 December), there is also personal support: experts from the Competence Centre for Writing, the library and other service facilities get you in the mood for writing your own research project with short keynote speeches on topics such as how to deal with writer's block and provide advice, support and structure.
The room is located in Building I with the room number I.232 and is reserved for doctoral students every Friday from 4 April 2025.

Break discs for fair cooperation
With the start of the examination period around the end of the winter semester, the demand for workstations in the library increases significantly. In order to avoid seat reservations and to support a fair allocation of workstations, we offer you break discs in our workstation areas, which function like car parking discs: When you leave your workstation, you set the start of your break. After 30 minutes, or 60 minutes at lunchtime, the space may be occupied by other library users.
16.01.2025: Paderborn University Campus Day
